From here you are given full instruction on how to SUP safely and efficiently. The group then follows the parameter of the basin before heading up Waiatarua stream.

Mission Bay Watersports 30 years paddling

Orakei Basin is one of the volcanoes from the Auckland volcanic field. After eruption about 85,000 years ago, it became a freshwater lake that had an overflow stream in the vicinity of present Orakei Rd bridge. As sea level rose after the end of the last Ice Age, the lake, was breached by the sea and has been a tidal lagoon ever since.

The whole experience is about 1.5 to 2 hours in duration.

Afterwards many groups head to Brothers beer across the road for a pint and burger. Pretty awesome adventure with friends or work mates.

Standup paddling is a very low impact exercise. This means it is is unlikely that you will do damage to the tendons and ligaments of your joints. Paddle boarding is particularly useful for runners that are experiencing shin splints or knee and hip pain, yet still need a good exercise to do while healing. So any one can give it a go.

Standup paddleboarding requires you to stand upright on the board, which requires a lot of core stability and leg strength to maintain balance. This not only helps you have a good balance while paddle boarding but increases your focus and balance in day-to-day activities, as well.

Train with your mates while going on an adventure. We would love to paddle with you so don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Students, have you already tried SUP or kayaking?

Posted by | News | No Comments

Mastering new challenges, learning the basics of stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking and having a lot of fun with other students at the beach and in the water – does that sounds good to you? Awesome, we can manage that!

Our School Programme provides all of the above. Our introduction to paddleboarding and kayaking lessons teach the fundamental knowledge about how to paddle and especially how to control the board and the kayak. They will also learn some significant things about water safety. All the students will spend two hours with different challenges, games and other activities like a distance paddle, technique practice or free time kayaking. Depending on time, we’ve also got the option to arrange a relay race event at the end of the day, however, we always focus on fun.

Our aims are that students expand their horizon, gain confidence by developing skills and enjoy a new outdoor experience. Apart from that, by spending time together and collaborating as a team, students can also improve the class atmosphere as our School Programme is a team building event as well. Furthermore, the students are supposed to acquire some self-reliance by getting a feeling for being responsible for their own and others’ safety and, as a consequent thereof, they are meant to reflect on managing risk in outdoor activities.

You’re interested? Then don’t hesitate to contact us. We would be pleased if we may arrange an offer in accordance with your special wishes.

Essentials students will need:

  • Paddling clothes: Swim wear, quick-dry shorts or leggings, thermal top and/or rash top.
  • Spare clothes / warm layer if it’s cold: e.g fleece top
  • Jacket if it’s raining (rain is not really an issue for paddle-boarders, but the wind can be!)
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Towel
  • Lunch / snacks and water bottle
  • Loads of smiles, energy and enthusiasm

City Surf Series

The City Surf Series – a social meeting point

City Surf Series is hanging out with family and friends and having a break from daily routine while doing some sports. This was the main motive of the passionate paddle boarder Troy Huston and his wife Stacey when they founded the City Surf series in 2012. Meanwhile, the project has grown to a greatly popular water sports event in Auckland and its surrounding area with hundreds of people taking part every week. Conveniently, Mission Bay is one of the locations where the City Surf series take place.

The concept is simple: Interested participants – those can be beginners as well as enthusiasts and ambitious athletes of all ages – compete against each other in paddle board races up to 4.5 kilometres. They can choose between different divisions, depending on age, skills and the particular board’s length and style. Besides, there are some competitions only for males or females and for teams as well, so the event is likewise an excellent chance to have some quality time with fellows or classmates – or to meet new people.

Troy, the organizer of the City Surf series, emphasizes that there are no previous skills required. For some divisions, newbies can even do some training sessions with the volunteer coaches before starting with the competition. Generally, it is one of the organizers’ main goals to inspire newbies by creating a social and cordial atmosphere. The competition is held friendly, so fun and fitness are to the fore as Troy points out.

It’s quite easy to take part in the City Surf series: Just register online at the event’s website http://www.citysurfseries.com and enjoy a fantastic and entertaining time with lots of other people. If possible, participants should bring their own boards and paddles because the organizers’ equipment is limited. Look forward to seeing you there.
